In 1965, with a 56% majority of students’ votes, the Anteater officially became UC Irvine’s mascot, modeled after Johnny Hart's B.C. comic strip anteater character, and “Zot” the official “war-cry.” UCI’s administration desired a “respectable” mascot, but students were steadfast to elect a unique mascot that set Irvine apart.

1965 Associated Students of UC Irvine
Founded in 1965, ASUCI provides student representation and programming such as vendor fairs and concerts. Ron Ridgle, the only Black student enrolled when UCI opened, was elected president in 1968 on a platform addressing student government finances.
The student newspaper New University was established in 1968. Originally a print publication, it is now entirely online and covers campus news, arts, sports, and opinion.
KUCI FM launched as a student-run radio station, providing music, talk programming, and a platform for campus voices.
One of UCI’s oldest traditions, Wayzgoose began in 1971 as a student-run Renaissance-style festival with costumes, games, and performances.
Greek Life began with three sororities and three fraternities and has grown into a diverse community of over 1,500 students.
The Cross-Cultural Center supports student communities including BSU, APSA, AISA, MEChA, and Alyansa ng mga Kababayan.
The Student Center opened in 1981 and has expanded to host student organizations, services, and campus events.
