Americans and the Holocaust
UC Irvine Libraries was one of 50 US libraries selected to host Americans and the Holocaust , a traveling exhibition from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum that examines the motives, pressures and fears that shaped Americans’ responses to Nazism, war and genocide in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s.

From I-Ching to Manga: UCI's East Asian Collection Celebrating 30 Years
Established in 1990, the UC Irvine Libraries’ East Asian Collection serves the needs of the East Asian research and teaching community on campus, which comprises faculty and students mainly from the departments of history, art history, East Asian studies, comparative literature, film and media, drama, sociology, political science and anthropology.

Finding the Edge: The Work and Insights of Edward O. Thorp
This exhibit highlighted the extraordinarily diverse life and career of Edward O. Thorp, a UC Irvine founding professor of mathematics, bestselling author, hedge fund manager, and blackjack player. This exhibit featured Thorp’s mathematical odyssey from academia, to the casinos of Las Vegas and the trading desks of Wall Street.

Korean Comfort Women and the U.S. Discoveries
Comfort women were women and girls forced into sexual slavery during World War II. This exhibit highlighted the newly discovered US archival materials on Korean comfort women with supporting documentary film clips and book displays.

UCI Law Stories: Past, Present, and Future
This exhibit highlighted pieces from UCI Libraries’ newest collection – Founding Dean Erwin Chemerinsky’s Papers. The exhibit also included select writings and memorabilia showcasing UCI Law’s historical beginnings, the school’s founding vision, and its pioneering and entrepreneurial community partners, faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

Donald McKayle: Dancing for All Time
This exhibit examined the life and work of the late Donald McKayle, distinguished professor of dance. Named by the Library of Congress and the Dance Heritage Coalition as “one of America’s irreplaceable dance treasures,” McKayle left indelible marks on the dance landscape throughout much of the 20th and early 21st centuries.

Costuming the Leading Ladies of Shakespeare: From Stratford to Orange County
This exhibit examined the evolution of stage costuming for women in Shakespearian plays, by focusing on two specific themes with Orange County connections: Helena Modjeska, one of the leading Shakespearean actresses on the American stage at the turn of the 19th/20th centuries, and productions at UC Irvine.

Out of all the states, California has the most national parks with nine in total, each representing an incredible diversity of environments and landscapes that include both the lowest point in Death Valley and the highest elevation in Sequoia and Kings Canyon.

Hope of Freedom: Project Ngoc’s Decade of Dedication
The exhibit chronicled the history and wide-reaching impact of Project Ngoc (Project Pearl), a UC Irvine student-led humanitarian organization, Through a decade of activism, it raised awareness and support for the plight of Vietnamese refugees detained in camps in Asia after the Vietnam War.

Immigrant Lives in “The OC” and Beyond
This exhibit depicted the lives of immigrants – and those around them – in our region, with a focus on Orange County, from its beginnings in the late 19th century to today. Topics portrayed include the legacy of an often turbulent past, the changing face of the people, the contemporary debate over immigration, and issues affecting immigrant workers.

Stage to Stage: The Theatrical Work of Robert Cohen
The exhibit was inspired by Robert Cohen’s donation of his collection of production books in which he meticulously gathered materials documenting the stage productions he has directed since launching his professional directorial career at UC Irvine in 1966.

California Universities Building Amistad: The UC-Cuba Initiative
The UC-Cuba Initiative is a multicampus research unit established in 2006 that seeks to “bring together interested academics from all campuses to coordinate and develop UC-Cuba related academic activities.”

Surviving War, Surviving Peace: The Central Highlanders of Vietnam
This exhibit featured a collection of photographs of the ethnic Highlanders of Vietnam donated to the Southeast Asian Archive. The traditional culture of these ethnic groups came under threat during the Vietnam War and has been largely decimated in the years since due to forced relocation policies of the current government.

Picture This: Five Centuries of Book Illustration
This exhibit examined the history of book illustration through a colorful overview of the evolution of various printing processes from the 15th century to the present.

The War Within: Dissent During Crisis in America
This exhibit examined issues of war, peace, dissent and dialogue during critical periods in the 20th century when free speech and civil liberties were threatened. The exhibit explored the Japanese internment during World War II; conscientious objectors, also during World War II; student protests during the Vietnam War; and McCarthyism during the Cold War.

Under Construction Indefinitely: 40 years of Designing UCI
The exhibit showcased the development of UC Irvine's built environment, beginning with architect and master planner William Pereira's initial concept for the campus, continuing through the explosive growth that continued in 2005.

A SEAA of Memories: Our Changing Southeast Asian American Communities
This exhibit showcased items revealing many aspects of the refugee experience including humanitarian efforts in Asian camps, cultural activities in the San Francisco Bay Area, household items that were abandoned on arrival in the U.S., and advocacy efforts on behalf of Southeast Asian American communities.

From Papyrus to Digital: UCI's Thesaurus of Ancient Greek Texts
Since 1972 UCI has been home to the pioneering Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG) Project, which seeks to create a comprehensive digital library of Greek literature from antiquity to the present era. In recognition of the project’s status as one of the first significant humanities projects in the world, the UCI Libraries have acquired the TLG archive to preserve for the benefit of future scholars.

Gestures of Life: Martha Graham's Legacy Through the Lens of Barbara Morgan
This exhibit highlighted Graham’s legacy through rarely seen images taken by the distinguished photographer Barbara Brooks Morgan (1900–1992). The Morgan photographs that were on display were prime examples of her close artistic collaboration with Graham during the 1930s and 1940s.

A Throw of the Dice: Artists Inspired by a Visual Text
The exhibit examined the visual and textual interpretations of Mallarmé's poem that have been created from the 1960s to the present and was curated by UC Irvine Professors Emeriti Renée Riese Hubert and Judd Hubert, who have published extensively on both artists' books and Mallarmé.

Building Special Collections: New Librarians Highlight Recent Acquisitions
Curated by seven UC Irvine librarians, this exhibit highlighted some of the rarities acquired by Special Collections and Archives. It featured a selection of rare books and archival materials on dance history, contemporary American literature, photography between the World Wars, African American icons, stage choreography, California fine printing, and UC Irvine student publications.

Derrida/Translating/Derrida
This exhibit celebrated the extraordinary scholarly career of Jacques Derrida, one of the preeminent philosophers and theorists of our time and one of UC Irvine's most renowned faculty members. The Libraries' Critical Theory Archive in the Department of Special Collections and Archives is home to Professor Derrida's scholarly papers, from which the materials in the exhibit were selected.

Are We There Yet? Vacationing in California, 1870–1940
This exhibit examined the changing nature of tourist travel to California over the course of its first 60 years, beginning with the great railroad era, progressing to the age of the personal automobile, and examining ramifications of that transition during the early 20th century.

Realms of the Sacred in Daily Life: Early Written Records of Mesoamerica
Prior to the arrival of European explorers in the Western Hemisphere in the late 15th century, the Americas were populated by 40 million people who spoke more than 1,000 languages. Today we can study these cultures through the achievements that have survived the ensuing centuries: their buildings and cities, monuments and statuary, pottery, murals, and books, known in Latin America as códices.

Documenting the Southeast Asian Refugee Experience
In 1987, UC Irvine Libraries established the Southeast Asian Archive to document the resettlement experiences of refugees and immigrants from the former Indochina, with a special focus on materials pertaining to the large communities established in Orange County and California.

Infinite Journey: Donald McKayle's Life in Dance
World-renowned choreographer and UC Irvine Professor of Dance Donald McKayle received the prestigious Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award, “established to honor the great choreographers who have dedicated their lives and talent to the creation of our modern dance heritage,” in 1992.
